Our country, Romania has the second worst recycling rate in Europe, while we are 6th in the EU at generating waste. Population awareness about the fact is limited, while in schools there are only few attempts. For electric, electronic and appliance waste (WEEE), only few dedicated shops are offering pick-up solutions for old equipment, but the process is slow and does not apply everywhere. Many of the old electronic components are thrown in the fields and contribute to pollution. But the most important aspect in our opinion is the lack of awareness in schools. In our school we have bins to collect batteries and light bulbs, but nobody uses them. There were some yearly contests with prizes, but only few schools participate, because it seemed hard to measure every student’s contribution. Our solution is the mobile app/game RecycleON, which can be downloaded from Play Store and App Store. The app teaches its users how to recycle properly and to be more aware of the fact that waste is not disposed of correctly most of the time. It is basically a game, based on the principle Recycle UP/ Level UP. The app has multiple goals: 1. Recycling events – because the thing that matters is quantity, SNC (Romanian National Collecting Society) wants to use it for recycling events in the communities surrounding the schools. Once every 3 months or once a semester, every school in Romania can organise a recycling event, where students (helped by their parents) can bring WEEE (electric, electronic and appliance waste). Recycling operators will bring special machinery to load the equipment brought by the participants. Based on the objects’ weight, the app users will receive virtual points by scanning a bar code, which can be later turned into virtual tickets. These tickets can be used in the annual raffle, where participants can win different prizes (an electric car, an electric scooter etc). 2. The continuous recycling – it can be done daily by bringing small and easily transportable objects to school (batteries, light bulbs). Students can dispose of them in recycling bins, then they can scan the bar code according to the disposed object. When scanned, the app will save the GPS location and a time-stamp (date and hour of disposal), and these can be later checked by watching the footage recorded by the cameras in the schools, to see if the students were cheating or not. This rewards the users with points for the Great Raffle, but for the local prizes as well. 3. Sharing information – the Recycling Patrol’s (Romanian NGO) main goal is to promote recycling. To solve that problem, the users will be notified of the Recycle Fun Fact of the Day (for example: Every year, 15 billion batteries are disposed of incorrectly. A column made from them would reach from Earth to the Moon and back). Weekly, a quiz will be created with questions from the information shared through the Fun Facts. The points received from solving the Quiz are also turned into tickets. Users get a positive feedback regardless of the result, the goal being children learning as much as they can about the impact of waste on the planet and for them to use the app constantly. For the programming and design part we initially used AppInventor from MIT, which is a friendly visual programming environment. We used our general Gmail address to be able to login all simultaneously and work on parts of the application. We all worked to design and programming, mostly using tutorials and help from Alex, Andrei and Iulia, which have 4 years programming experience in C/C++. Most of the work was done online, connected via Skype share screen. We used Edmodo as repository for all documents, but also WhatsApp. The home screen was designed and programmed by Andrada and Darius. Recycle Class and Recycle Quiz by Alex and Andrei. Sign in/ Login – Stefan and Iulia. Events and bar-code scanner – Alex and Darius. Collecting / pick-up from home – Iulia and Andrei. About us – Andrada and Stefan. After the initial version presented at our National Qualifications in Bucharest, we decided to switch to Thunkable (another visual programming environment) and try to improve the graphic interface.

Q&A What makes your solution different from what is being used to solve this problem now, and why do you think it is better?

Recycling apps have been made before, are still made and will probably be made from now on. The Recycling Patrol has had an app developed by Telekom, but it wasn’t constantly used by its users, because, to be fair, we don’t recycle everyday waste from electrical and electronic equipment. Plus, an app that is used once in 3-4 months, or even more, will eventually be forgotten. The innovative part of our project is our original idea, the fact that RecycleON is a game that you can play daily, or at least weekly, and from which you gain something. From our research over the world, there is only one application which reward users in a more or less similar way (Happen), but it is dedicated to office buildings Another innovative idea (based on what we know so far) is that we want to motivate and implicate kids in these recycling activities. The daily Recycle Fun Fact or Recycling Class (for example: Used batteries contain heavy metals that are extremely toxic. Once they’re disposed of incorrectly, they can affect the soil and the groundwater. Mercury (also contained in batteries) is a cancerous substance that can badly affect the nervous system and the kidneys). Imagine this kind of information being daily shared through a comic. And then, once a week, students can take the Quiz to gain more points in the application. Did you get any feedback from the people who would benefit from your solution? If so, how did you modify your solution?

We initially wanted to test the app in the closest school to us, “St. Constantin and Elena” in Bucharest. We presented the idea to our teachers and then to several classes in the school and the general feed-back was positive. After we went to SNC (Romanian National Collecting Society) in January 2020, where we talked with Andrei Berekzi (Managing Director Axial Trading, Head of SNC), we were given the idea of implementing our project in all the schools in our country, considering that the recycling of WEEE is based on quantity. There, we have seen for the first time what happens with WEEE, then we paid a visit to the TWR Factory Jilava, where we saw how plastic and metal are separated and how all these materials from old appliances are reused in the industry. In old computers, microprocessors have small quantities of precious metals (silver, gold), which are separated as well. For these “raw materials”, companies pay lots of money, and from this we will get the money for the prizes won by participating in the recycling activities. Finally, we spoke to Alexandra Arnăutu and Ada Lungu from the Recycling Patrol (Romanian NGO for promoting recycling in schools), who told us about their experience with working with schools. At that time, the idea of the quiz and “the good deed of the day” was kind of left behind, but when we mentioned it as a “maybe will do it in the future”, Alexandra and Ada insisted on creating a game section for maintaining the connection between the app and its users, which was perfect, as this was actually our initial idea. The Quiz we have now was made with their help, as they provided us with information for it. What would it take for your innovative solution to be used in the real world? Cost? Safety? RecycleON will be implemented in schools with the help of the Recycling Patrol and of SNC (Romanian National Collecting Society). We will advertise our app in some schools, on Recycling Patrol’s site, on few national television channels, as we were offered, and the marketing problem is taken care of by Recycling Patrol and by SNC. The major difficulty that we have encountered is the graphic design of the app. We keep working on it and we will have a beta version to implement in several schools (hopefully at the beginning of the next school year in September).
